    Our Curriculum Intent

At Hanley St Luke’s, our curriculum is carefully designed to reflect and fulfil our vision and values:

    • To provide a coherent, well-structured academic and non-academic curriculum that supports all pupils to achieve sustained mastery, with opportunities to deepen their understanding where possible — fostering lifelong learning and inspiring enriching aspirations.

    • To offer a rich cultural capital that broadens experiences and perspectives — nurturing lifelong learning and aspirations.

    • To give pupils meaningful experiences that help them develop into confident, spiritual, and responsible citizens — embracing life-enhancing faith and life-giving relationships.

Our curriculum is enhanced by our Next GEN curriculum, which integrates cutting-edge learning opportunities including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Oracy skills, career education, and the vital importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). These elements ensure our pupils are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to thrive in future careers and life in a rapidly changing world.

Our vision statements underpin everything we do across the curriculum. Our school rules — Be Ready; Be Responsible; Be Safe — support pupils in living out this vision and upholding our values. Every part of our curriculum, including academic subjects, non-academic provision, extracurricular activities, and collective worship, plays an essential role in realising this vision.

    Curriculum Implementation

We organise our curriculum around what we call the ABC of Curriculum Structure:

    • Curriculum Breadth: Covering key knowledge, skills, and standards while providing rich cultural capital. This includes extensive STEM opportunities such as science investigations, technology projects, engineering challenges, and maths mastery to inspire curiosity and innovation.

    • Threshold Concepts: Identifying core ideas in each subject that build deep conceptual understanding and are revisited frequently.

    • Progression of Learning: Ensuring pupils move through stages of understanding — from basic, to advancing, to deep mastery.

    Our curriculum stages include:

    • Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery & Reception): Focusing on securing Early Learning Goals and the Characteristics of Effective Learning.

    • Years 1 & 2: Developing key skills and knowledge for Key Stage 1, building on Early Years Foundation Stage foundations.

    • Years 3 & 4: Consolidating Key Stage 1 learning and introducing new knowledge and skills.

    • Years 5 & 6: Deepening understanding, consolidating prior learning, and preparing for future academic and career challenges.

Our Next GEN curriculum embeds AI awareness and Oracy development across subjects, while our careers education introduces children to a broad range of pathways, helping them to understand the skills they need for the future workplace.

We recognise that pupils learn at different paces and provide tailored support and challenges to ensure everyone achieves their potential — some needing additional scaffolding, others ready for deeper exploration.

We continually ask ourselves: How well are pupils engaging with the curriculum and how well are they retaining previously taught knowledge?

    Curriculum Impact

At every key stage, the vast majority of pupils demonstrate sustained mastery of the curriculum content, with many achieving a greater depth of understanding. Our pupils show how our vision shapes their relationships, aspirations, and faith. They leave Hanley St Luke’s well-prepared and motivated for the next stage of their lifelong learning journey, equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in STEM fields and the modern workforce.
