  • British Values

At Hanley St Luke’s, we are committed to developing and promoting British Values throughout our school and curriculum. As Lord Nash stated,

“We want every school to promote the basic British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance for those of different faiths and beliefs.”

    Promoting British Values

“Do everything in love.”1 Corinthians 16:14
“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”John 10:10

At Hanley St Luke’s CofE Academy, our Christian vision is rooted in the belief that every person is created in the image of God and is therefore deeply valued. We seek to enable all members of our school community to flourish spiritually, academically, socially and emotionally so they may live life in all its fullness.

British Values are not separate from our Christian ethos; they are expressions of it. Through love, dignity, justice and community, pupils learn how to live well together and contribute positively to society.

Our Christian Foundation for British Values

We understand British Values through Christian teaching about living in harmony with others:

    • Democracy reflects the Christian belief that every voice matters

    • Rule of Law reflects justice, responsibility and reconciliation

    • Individual Liberty reflects God-given uniqueness and dignity

    • Mutual Respect reflects loving our neighbour

    • Tolerance of Faiths and Beliefs reflects living peacefully in a diverse world

At Hanley St Luke’s these values are experienced through collective worship, prayer, RE, PSHE, relationships and daily school life.

Helping Children Understand – The Hand Model

We use the hand model to help pupils remember and understand values in a meaningful way:

    Thumb – Democracy
We listen to each other and make shared decisions. Pupils take part in voting, pupil leadership and class discussions, learning that their voice has value and responsibility.

Index Finger – Rule of Law
Rules help communities flourish. Pupils understand fairness, forgiveness and making the right choices even when it is difficult.

Middle Finger – Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
We learn about a wide range of religions and world views and understand that difference is a gift, not a threat.

    Ring Finger – Mutual Respect
We treat others as we would like to be treated. Kindness and dignity shape relationships across the school.

    Little Finger – Individual Liberty
Each person is unique and loved by God. Pupils are encouraged to develop confidence, independence and moral responsibility within safe boundaries.

    Living Out the Vision

Through worship, reflection and courageous conversations, pupils learn to:

    • act with compassion and integrity

    • challenge injustice and unfairness

    • respect difference

    • contribute to their community

    • grow as thoughtful citizens in modern Britain

By rooting British Values in our Christian vision, pupils understand that these are not simply rules to follow but ways of living out love for God and neighbour, enabling everyone to flourish together.
