🌟 Welcome to Year 5!

Welcome to Year 5 — a year full of exciting learning, growing independence, and new challenges! We’re looking forward to a fantastic journey together, exploring inspiring texts, deepening our understanding of the world, and building confidence in every subject.

📚 English in Year 5

This year, our English curriculum is packed with rich and engaging texts that will develop our reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Our core texts include:

  • Matilda by Roald Dahl

  • Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo

  • The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame

These books provide the foundation for creative writing, comprehension, and discussions in class.

Our Year 5 author focus is Katherine Rundell, whose imaginative and adventurous stories will further inspire our love of reading.

✝️ Bible Story Focus

Our class Bible story is Abraham and the Starry Sky, which reminds us that:

God loves us and always keeps His promises.

This story encourages faith, trust, and hope — values we explore throughout the year in our reflections and daily life.

🏃‍♀️ PE and Games

PE is an important part of our curriculum, helping us stay active, healthy, and build teamwork.

  • Indoor PE: Friday

  • Outdoor Games: Thursday

Please ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit on these days.

🚌 Year 5 Trips and Enrichment

We have a fantastic range of trips and experiences planned this year to enrich our learning:

Autumn 1

  • Hanley Library

Autumn 2

  • Dudson Centre

  • Stanley Head Outdoor Education Centre

Summer 1

  • Wolseley River Centre – Outdoor learning and science exploration

Summer 2

  • Whole School Author Visit – A celebration of reading and storytelling

🌟 Roles and Responsibilities in Year 5

We encourage all pupils to take pride in their classroom and school community through a variety of leadership opportunities, including:

  • Arts Ambassadors

  • Action Club Leaders

  • Book Area Monitors

  • Prayer Partners

  • School Councillors

These roles help build confidence, responsibility, and a strong sense of community.

We are excited for all that this year will bring and look forward to sharing your child’s learning journey. Year 5 is a year of discovery, responsibility, and growth — and we’re so glad to be on this journey together.

Warm wishes,
The Year 5 Team
