Key Stage 2 SATs are national assessments taken by pupils in Year 6 in England. They measure what children have learned during primary school and help secondary schools understand each pupil’s academic level.

The tests usually take place in May.

Subjects Tested

Pupils are tested in:

• Reading – one paper with texts and comprehension questions

• Maths

  • One Arithmetic paper

  • Two reasoning papers

• Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG)

  • Grammar & punctuation paper

  • Spelling test

Writing is assessed by the teacher during the year rather than in a test.

These assessments are organised by the Standards and Testing Agency on behalf of the Department for Education.

Top Revision Tips

1. Little and Often

Short revision sessions (15–20 minutes) each day are more effective than long sessions once a week.

2. Practise Arithmetic Daily

Quick recall of times tables and number facts helps a lot in the maths tests.

3. Read Regularly

Reading different texts (stories, newspapers, information books) improves comprehension skills.

4. Practise Past Questions

Trying SATs-style questions helps pupils get used to the format and timing.

5. Don’t Forget Breaks

Regular breaks help concentration and reduce stress.

6. Stay Positive

SATs are just one way of showing learning. Doing your best is what matters most.
