Art and Design at Hanley St Luke’s C of E Academy

At Hanley St Luke’s, we actively encourage children to develop their artistic awareness and acquire the skills, knowledge, and understanding to express their unique ideas. Our creative curriculum ensures that every child has the opportunity to explore a wide range of artistic skills in a supportive and inspiring environment.

Our Approach to Teaching and Learning in Art

    We aim to:

    • Help children develop their own ideas and express themselves creatively.

    • Encourage children to explore and master a variety of artistic techniques.

    • Build knowledge of great artists and inspire children to draw on this rich heritage.

    • Support children in expressing emotions, interpreting observations, and showcasing their individuality.

    • Nurture confidence and adventurousness in drawing and creating.

    • Foster imaginative and original thinking, allowing children to experiment freely without fear of mistakes — there is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ in art!

    • Develop independence, initiative, and originality to enhance creativity.

    • Encourage critical reflection and evaluation of their own work and that of others.

    • Teach children to skilfully select and use materials, processes, and techniques to bring their ideas to life and embrace happy accidents.

    • Expand children’s understanding of artists, craft makers, and designers across history and cultures.

    • Support and challenge all learners, including those with special educational needs and those identified as gifted and talented.

    How We Achieve This

    • Clear skills progression outlined in our medium-term planning.

    • Sharing success criteria with children and encouraging reflection on their learning.

    • Promoting equal opportunities for all pupils.

    • Gradually introducing a variety of materials and techniques, with plenty of time for exploration.

    • Using sketchbooks in Key Stage 2 for planning, experimenting, and evaluating artwork. In Key Stage 1, teachers document progress through topic books or individual artworks.

    • Creating a classroom environment where creativity and experimentation are as valued as the final piece.

    • Drawing inspiration from memory, imagination, and direct observation.

    • Providing time for children to discuss, reflect on, and refine their work.

    • Ensuring clear progression of skills throughout each child’s school journey.
