    🌟 Welcome to Year 6!

    Year 6 is an exciting and rewarding year as pupils prepare for the next stage of their education. Children develop independence, resilience and confidence while exploring a rich and engaging curriculum. Throughout the year, pupils will tackle challenging texts, investigate scientific concepts, learn about significant historical events and deepen their understanding of the world around them.

    English Adventures

    This year our reading and writing will be inspired by a range of high-quality texts that promote imagination, empathy and critical thinking.

    Our core books include:

    • Skellig by David Almond
    • Holes by Louis Sachar
    • Once by Morris Gleitzman

    Guided reading texts also include:

    • Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman
    • Macbeth
    • The Island by Armin Greder
    • A range of poetry and non-fiction texts linked to our wider curriculum.

    In English, children will strengthen their vocabulary, master complex grammar, develop their writing skills and write across a variety of genres including narratives, newspaper reports, persuasive writing, formal letters and non-chronological reports. 

    ✝️ Bible Story Focus

    Our class Bible story is Abraham and the Starry Sky, which reminds us that:

    God loves us and always keeps His promises.

    This story encourages faith, trust and hope—values that we explore throughout our worship, RE lessons and daily life in school.

    Year 6 scientists will explore fascinating topics through investigation and enquiry.

    We will study:

    • Living Things and Their Habitats – classifying plants and animals.
    • Animals Including Humans – learning about the circulatory system and healthy lifestyles.
    • Evolution and Inheritance – exploring adaptation, fossils and the work of Alfred Wallace and Charles Darwin.
    • Electricity – creating circuits and investigating electrical components.
    • Light – understanding reflection, shadows and how light travels. 

    Children will work scientifically by observing, predicting, testing, recording and analysing results.

    History

    Our history learning will focus on significant changes in Britain after 1066, including:

    • Crime and Punishment Through Time
    • The Battle of Britain and World War II
    • Black History Month studies including influential figures such as Harriet Tubman and Jesse Owens.
    • Local History and the importance of canals in the growth of industry in Stoke-on-Trent.

    Geography

    Our geography learning will include:

    • Rivers – studying how rivers are formed and investigating the River Trent.
    • The Economic Activity of the UK – understanding industries, trade and sustainability.
    • Advanced Map Skills using Digimap, Ordnance Survey maps and fieldwork investigations.

    Please ensure children come to school in the correct PE kit on their PE days.

    Year 6 pupils will participate in a range of activities including athletics, cricket, rounders and indoor fitness activities throughout the year.
